In Men in Black (1997), James/J enters the building and is given some tests along the other decorated soldiers and the following explanations are in the captions of the images.

There was only one table in that room and everyone had to sit in the most impractical place imaginable to take a written exam. It makes no sense at all to make people take a written exam in egg-shaped monstrosities from 1970s IKEA. The written exam didn't matter, it was about finding a solution to a problem they all had. That is how James took the table for him to use while the other soldiers looked at him like 'You want to fail? Be my guest so we can laugh at you.'

You know by default every man in that room would be proficient with a firearm. That obviously wasn't the test. It was another lateral trial that required you to think before you acted. The soldiers see \"monsters\" and think, \"shoot\". You don't want your agent to be the guy who shoots an alien by reflex and starts an interstellar war. Little Tiffany holding quantum physics books is a clear sign of an alien and no one except James knew. He also explained about an alien on the street post and the alien 'snarling', later to be an alien working out on the street post and an alien sneezing or coughing holding some paper. Forgot to mention that Z pressing down the remote and pulling little Tiffany out isn't the way to tell James he failed, but he succeeded in the firing range test while yelling at him for shooting 'a poor little girl'.

K explains to Z about seeing James chase down the cephalopod, which is one of the toughest things to do as a human alone while pulling out a gun and shooting at it is an easier, but risky solution.

The 'eye exam' given by Z is a way to tell the other soldiers they failed all the tests since James is smart enough in all the tests with K's convinces. Z saying \" You're everything we've come to expect from years of government training.\" isn't a compliment to the soldiers, but a complete heartburn insult in disguise to the soldiers.

In summary, Z is testing everyone in the room and James is the right man for the job due to his out-of-the-box thinking.

In Men In Black (1997), the crux of the movie is that “The galaxy is on Orion’s Belt.” But…

It was on Orion’s “bell.”

The Arquillian Prince said “what is word” as he was dying. He agreed it was “belt” in a moment of duress.

The cat has a bell on its collar.

When they reveal it’s the cat, they use a bell over and over again in the next scene in the morgue.

The Galaxy was on Orion’s bell.

In “Men in Black” [1997], Tony Shalhoub plays a pawn shop owner named Jeebs, who J learns is actually an alien. In “Men in Black 3” [2012], J goes back in time to 1969. When J first steps out onto the street after time traveling, there’s a shot of Tony, presumably as Jeebs, running a news stand.
