Die Hard (1988) accents, but not the German ones this time

Watching Die Hard for the 367th time (Merry Christmas y'all!), and I noticed something weird about the accents of some of the actors, specifically the civil engineers tasked with cutting the power to the building. The scene where they are arguing with the FBI guy to cut the power, they all have thick accents not indicative of Los Angeles. The FBI guy has a New York accent (which, fine, FBI agents get stationed outside of their home town all the time.) The civil engineer boss also has a thick New York accent (a little weirder) and the guy hanging out of the manhole has a thick Chicago accent. Wtf? Just seems like lazy casting to me. Felt very 80s "blue collar job workers should have blue collar accents" which comes across very corny to me. Thoughts?
